The word “Catholic” should not be confused with the modern term “Roman Catholic” (see Brief History/Timeline). Catholic, as understood in the Nicene Creed, is from the original Greek word, Catholiki, meaning universal or whole. The Church’s Catholicity expresses her adhesion to the wholeness of the Faith throughout the centuries, without adding to or subtracting from that divinely revealed Faith.
