Orthodox Christians believe that Christ died a very real and painful death on the Cross, not simply to pay a “debt” for the sins of humanity, but to overcome death itself. Only by destroying the gates of Hades and descending into Hades could God break humanity free from death’s grasp. There is NO place that God cannot go and cannot redeem.
