Our understanding of fasting is not in “giving something up” for something else. Fasting, in the Orthodox sense, is one of the most powerful tools of self-discipline, which can, in turn, prepare a person to curb more destructive appetites of anger, jealousy, and ill-will toward others.
Fasting is an abstinence from certain types of foods (typically meat and dairy products) and a restriction of the amount of food eaten. Fasting is prescribed on most Wednesdays and Fridays in remembrance of Jesus’ betrayal and crucifixion, and especially during the somber period of Great Lent and Holy Week.
