Byzantine Chant
Byzantine chant is the primary form of Orthodox liturgical music. It is usually performed, unaccompanied, by one or several chanters, as opposed to a choir. There are a total of eight tones, which are rotated based on the appointed hymn, (troparion or kontakion) of the day.

Orthodox worship is responsorial in nature, and the primary function of chanting is to assist the priest in performing the service and providing the appropriate responses.
