About our Byzantine temple

The Bible is full of journey stories – Abraham and Sarah, Joseph, Moses, Joshua, Our Lord, Peter and Paul. The message is clear. Faith in Christ is never about standing still and complacency, but about journeying forward.
Holy Trinity is a parish that has been on a journey for over ninety years. Founded by immigrants who had journeyed themselves to this country, the parish’s first temple was on West Street. Outgrowing that facility, our journey took us to our second church at 40th and Pennsylvania streets in 1960. Our present, beautiful Byzantine structure was built in 2008 to serve our ever-expanding parish community.
Our temple’s design is very reminiscent of the magnificent Byzantine Church of Holy Wisdom (Hagia Sophia) in Constantinople. It therefore recalls our tradition’s glorious past; yet, our temple is also extremely modern. While the design of Holy Trinity is the first of its kind in the entire world, it also features an Orthodox hallmark — the expansive dome. In Orthodox Christianity, the dome signifies the universe and eternity.
There’s an often-told story about how Russia came to embrace the Orthodox Christian Faith. The 10th century ruler, Vladimir I, sent emissaries out in search of a faith that Russia should adopt. When the emissaries returned, they were complimentary of all the traditions they had visited. But in describing Orthodox worship, the emissaries told the Czar that they did not know if they were in heaven, or on earth.
We hope that you experience a similar sense of wonder during your visit to Holy Trinity. Please consider joining us for Divine Liturgy every Sunday morning. We welcome everyone to share the spirituality and beautiful traditions of our ancient and timeless faith.
