A few of the many Lenten opportunities you should take advantage of this year:
SATURDAYS OF THE SOULS: February 6 and 20 — Special days for the commemoration of the deceased — especially those with anniversaries of passings during Lent. Bring list of those to be remembered, along with prosfora and/or kollyva to be offered in their memory.
‘CLEAN’ MONDAY: February 15 — Special attention should be paid to strictly abstaining — or fasting completely on this day. It’s the start of a 40-period of abstention from what basically all animal products — which all Orthodox Christians are expected to observe. It is not option only for “the pious.” As with the rest of the year, Wednesdays & Fridays are considered days of strictest abstention — Sundays, the most lenient. Note that abstention/fasting is predicated on nominally good health and is adjusted according to age and fasting “experience.” Be sure to see your physician and/or priest with any doubts or questions as to the extent of fasting that is right for YOU.
SUNDAY OF ORTHODOXY/PROCESSION OF THE ICONS: February 21 — Orthodox Christians from around central Indiana will again gather at Holy Trinity — under our majestic new dome — to celebrate the strength which we derive from our common Faith that was confirmed by the Fathers of the Seventh Ecumenical Council. Bring an icon from home and show your pride in this ancient tradition of our Faith.
THE VENERATION OF THE CROSS: March 7 — The EMPTY Cross, the awesome and power-filled sign of our Faith, is commemorated on this day. The flowers that grace the Cross in its procession around the temple are distributed to those in attendance to be saved throughout the year in the iconostasis of the home as a reminder of the power of the Cross.
CONFESSION — Confession is the Church's way of purging the soul of the guilt of sin through the cleansing tears of repentance. Confessions can be scheduled throughout the year but Lenten prayer and introspection make this an ideal time for ensuring that our souls are as free from stain as our new Paschal suits. Call Father Anastasios to schedule your appointment early in Lent — and don't miss this chance to flush away the guilt of sin from your life.
