“We venerate Thy most pure image..”

There is a distinct difference between veneration and worship. Worship is strictly reserved for God alone. Veneration is an expression of honor given to the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) and the saints.

Icons have been called “windows into Heaven” because of what they represent. When we venerate, or kiss, an icon, we are not honoring the wood and paint, but the saint depicted there. For us, venerating an icon is as natural as a child kissing a photo of his grandparents. See also Icons.
